Ugly is the New Beautiful...

If you want to know what "ugly is the new beautiful" means, look no further. It's right at our doorstep. No, I'm not talking about Ugly Betty on Channel 5. Just look at our finalists for Miss Singapore Universe 2007. They must be competing to see who's the ugliest of the lot. (I'm so mean. I'm so mean!!)
I thought all along, we've been clamouring for the notion of beauty AND brains? That's not in vogue anymore? But surely if the judges are not looking out for a brainy beauty, they must be at least looking out for people with beauty, since by definition, it is a beauty contest. Or to put it bluntly, it must at least be a search for bimbos. But apparently, it's been proven otherwise.
No way will i encourage my friends to join such a competition. Because if beauty is defined only as such, they would need to join Miss Universe already.
The organisers might as well scrap the event. It's turned into a mockery of some sort. It's so degrading to the rest of our female population, seeing them represent Singapore women on the world stage. All right, i'm just being mean. But can anyone tell the organisers the meaning of quality control, please?
